You should then go visit Osios Lukas. This is an ancient monastery that is comprised of a few building located on a rolling hillside right outside the city of Delphi. You will also want to visit the Delphi Museum. Inside the museum are some of the ancient artifacts that have been discovered from various archeological digs across the cit and surrounding areas. You also must visit the ancient temple of Apollo and visit the Oracle within. In Ancient Greece millions of people from around the world would come to Delphi to have their fortunes told by the Oracle. You can still make this magical journey back in time and visit the same location that has fascinated people around the world for hundreds of years.

Once you have exhausted yourself by visiting all of the ancient historical sites that the city has to offer you will want to partake in many of the winter sports in Delphi Greece.

You may not automatically think of Greece as a large tourist attraction for winter sports but within the borders of Delphi, Greece lies one of the most fantastic ski resorts in the world and the largest winter sports center in Greece. The Parnassos Center is located on the Parnassos Mountain range just a short drive outside of Delphi. There are two main sites where you can begin your skiing adventure and both of them end up in Toumborachi. There are numerous skiing routes, and ski lifts that will keep you occupied for days. There are also skiing trails for any level of skier from beginner to expert. You can find a ski slope that fits your personal taste in Delphi, Greece.

At the base of the Parnassos Mountain range and located adjacent to the Parnassos Center is the Pappos-Baloumis ski school. This world-class ski instruction school will assist you with all of your equipment needs as well as provide instruction for beginning or advanced level skiers.
If you are not into skiing or not physically able to ski there are still other winter sport activities that can keep you occupied while on holiday in Delphi. You can rent ice skates and skate at one of several ice skating rinks around the city. You could also rent a snowmobile at the Parnassos Mountain range and go for a guided motorized tour of the mountain range with a experienced guide. This tour is recommended for visitors of any age as it will allow you to get a glimpse of the majesty of the mountains and reach otherwise inaccessible areas through the ease of riding a motorized snow mobile. This is the recommended tour for those who have physical limitations that do not allow them to ski or ice skate. Another great winter activity that you can participate in is a sleigh ride. All around the city are sleigh ride carriages that can be rented. You can rent them for a short jaunt through the city or for an entire day trip into the surrounding mountain ranges. They will even provide hot beverages and a hot meal if you trip is long enough. There truly is something for everyone in Delphi, Greece.

There are some great places to live in Greece, all of which have their own unique character and attractions.

Here is more information about the different places that you could live Greece:

Mainland

Athens - Athens is the capital of Greece and has approx 5 million inhabitants which is almost half the population of Greece. As with any large city the cost of living is more expensive and the salaries remain low.

Pelopennese - The Pelopennese is the southernmost point of mainland Greece and in fact can be called an Island since the completion of the Corinth Canal in 1893.

Mycenae and Mystras are two very popular and historically important areas in the Peloponnese, and are visited by thousands of visitors every year. Mystras is a perfect example of a Byzantine city, with its well preserved houses and churches that date back to the 14th and 15th century.

Halkidiki - Halkidiki is a famous Greek peninsula which is situated in Northern Greece near the city of Thessaloniki. Halkidiki has three peninsulas which are called Cassandra, Sithonia and Mt Athos.

Mt Athos is inhabited by 1400 monks and there are 20 monasteries and can only be visited by men and it needs a special permit obtained in advance.

Thessaloniki – Thessaloniki, (also known as Salonika or Saloniki,) has given Greece some of its greatest musicians, artists, poets and thinkers. It has some of the most beautiful beaches and has some of the finest hotels and best restaurants in northern Greece. Home to the Thessaloniki Film Festival and the International Trade Fair and host to many cultural events.

Islands

Cyclades - The Cyclades are the best known and most visited of all the Greek islands attracting hundreds of thousands of island-hoppers in the summer months.

There are remote herb-scented hillsides where farmers use donkeys to bring barley in from the fields. There are ancient sites and some of the most important centers of religious pilgrimage in the whole of Greece.

Dodecanese - The Dodecanese islands are located in the southeast part of the Aegean sea and consist of twelve major island and a number of smaller islands.

They have beautiful beaches with crystal clear waters, whitewashed houses, charming villages, lush vegetation, Venetian & Byzantine monuments.

Ionian - The Ionian islands are located off the west coast of Greece and are composed of Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos (Zante), Lefkada, Ithaca, Paxos and Kythira.

One of the best known sights on Zante is the Shipwrecked Beach which is the most photographed places in the world.

Kefalonia being famous for where Captain Corelli’s Mandolin was set.

The Ionian islands receive above average rainfall (Corfu has the highest rainfall in the whole of Greece) with the result that they’re lush and green, awash with olive groves, cypresses and mountainsides carpeted with orchids and other wild flowers in springtime. The luxuriant vegetation comes as something of a surprise to those more accustomed to the stark barrenness of the Cycladic islands. Winters are mild and wet but the summer months are extremely hot as the islands don’t receive the meltemi wind that cools the Aegean islands

East Aegean - The East Aegean islands are closer to Turkey than the Greek mainland, there are six islands and are less well known than the Cyclades but still very beautiful with mountainous landscapes, dense forests of pine trees and beautiful sandy beaches.

Saronic - The Saronic islands are the closest distance to Athens and the port of Pireaus, which makes them popular for the Athenian people to visit for weekends, a lot of them own holiday homes on Aegina and Agistri which are the nearest and can be reached in about 1 hour on the ferry.

Sporades - The Sporades group of islands lie off the eastern shore of mainland Greece and consist of eleven islands of which only four are inhabited: Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisis and Skyros.

They are known for dense vegetation and mountainous terrain and the bluest and cleanest seas you will come across.

Evia - The island of Evia, located off the eastern coast of Central Greece, is one of the most popular and unique of all the Greek Islands. Second in size only to the island of Crete, Evia is a wonderful holiday and vacation destination that is ideal for all types of holidays throughout the year.

Evia is best described as being an island with three main parts – the north, central and south. Each has it’s own inspiring landscape, rich vegetation and colourful scenery, interesting history, ancient sites and place of interest, as well as so much more.

Evia is an island that has a very diverse and inspiring landscape. For lovers of nature, the islands has some breathtaking imagery, as well as beautiful ravines and forests that are just crying out to be explored.

Crete - Crete is the largest of the Greek Islands and is located in the south of the Aegean sea. Crete is the most famous of the islands and the most popular for expats to live.

It is made up of four prefectures: Chania, Hereklion, Lassithi and Rethymnon.

Although it is the largest and receives many visitors in the summer you can still find quiet tranquil villages away from tourism and see the real way of life, the old women making their tablecloths, the old men on donkeys, children playing in the narrow streets.

Crete has a 1,000 kilometer long coastline dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas with a multitude of soft sandy beaches along the beautiful Mediterranean Sea.

We chose to live on Crete just outside the town of Rethymnon in a small village which is peaceful and so beautiful, I still pinch myself to remind me that we actually live here and are not on holiday.

It can get very hot in the summer months but we live a five minute walk from the beach so we can stay cool. There are many villages close to us that have an expat community in them and that is fine if you feel the need to be around other British people, we on the other hand wanted to live among the local Greek (or Cretan) people, in fact in our village we are the only British, there are a few other families from Romania, Georgia, Russia, Holland and Germany in the area also.

Everyone is different and have their own ideas of where they want to live, so you have to make your own decision of where is right for you and your family. This website is here to help you make an informed choice but the decision is still yours.

An ideal yacht cruise package in the Greek islands, the 7-day cruise “Jewels of the Cyclades”.

The 7-day cruise to the Cyclades departs, after a drink on deck of the luxurious motorsailer, from Marina Zea. First destination is the green island of Poros, off the eastern coast of Peloponnese. After a three hour visit we set sail for Kimolos, where we enjoy a morning swim and a BBQ on deck.

The next island to call is Folegandros, one of the less known islands of the Aegean Sea. We spend the afternoon exploring the charms of the island and continue our itinerary for Santorini.

We spend the third day of our cruise in Santorini, one of the most cosmopolitan islands of the Cyclades with the unique landscape, the beautiful villages, the magical sunsets and all the extraordinary atmosphere of the island. In the morning we sail for Antiparos and after a morning swim we arrive to the neighbouring island of Paros.

          ]]>

Paros is one of the most favourite spots in the Aegean, with serene landscape, picturesque villages and amazing beaches, the island combines a cosmopolitan ambience with the possibility of seclusion. At night you will dance and enjoy yourself in our famous Greek Night.

The next morning before we arrive at Myconos we can make an optional tour in the sacred island of Delos and admire one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Monuments. In Myconos we enjoy a swim off ship in one of the beautiful bays of the island and after that we have the whole day and night to explore the most cosmopolitan island of the Aegean.

After the Myconos experience, we enjoy a morning swim and sail for Syros, the administrative capital of the Cycladic islands and its sophisticated capital, Ermoupoli, which is built on a naturally amphitheatrical site with impressive architecture. The last island to call before our return to Marina Zea is Kythnos, an unspoiled island, where we can enjoy a swim in the most beautiful beach of the island, Kolones.

Sailing from Marina Zea via Cape Sounio we have the opportunity to see the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon. Late in the afternoon we arrive at Marina Zea and disembarkation is the next morning, after breakfast.

For those interested in sailing holiday cruises, offer an ideal yacht cruise package in the Greek islands, the 7-day cruise “Jewels of the Cyclades”. In our Greek Island Itinerary we have included some of the most cosmopolitan and some of the less known islands of the Cycladic group.

When approaching a port in the Cycladic Islands, travelers anticipate a collection of cubic white houses, amphitheatrically arranged between a blue sky and a curved harbor lined with lazy cafes. The Port of Ermoupolis, on the island of Syros, differs from this stereotype.

The striking Neoclassical appearance of Ermoupolis takes visitors by surprise, as does the Neorion Shipyard which is so dominating that all the houses seem to withdraw from it, in the direction of two characteristic hilltops, situated side by side, like twins. Some travelers seem to panic over the otherness, “Let’s get out of here!” Forgetting that the Queen of the Cyclades might be offended, an old nickname for Ermoupolis, the capital of the Cyclades.

Once the leading port of Greece – famous for its buildings, wealth and cultural life – Ermoupolis today is a somewhat fading acquaintance.

Well-kept mansions in pastel shades alternate with neighbors in decay, the shells of empty factory halls attract only pigeons. There are signs of revival, as abandoned houses are slowly but surely restored to the dream mansions they originally were, thereby re-establishing the main asset of Syros: Ermoupolis’ architectural design. It’s indeed exceptional, whereas neighboring islands are stronger on beaches and archeology.

Strategically situated on the seaway between east and west, Syros has always been exposed to the moods of the Aegean. Certain waves kept coming back, like the crushing waves of pirates. In 1207, a Venetian wave hit Syros, led by Marco Sanudo who annexed the island to the Duchy of Naxos, a feudal rule to last for centuries. Ermoupolis did not exist yet, merely its predecessor, Ano Syros, a medieval village occupying the left hilltop. A Turkish wave eventually relieved the burdens, through freedom of worship, self-government and economic progress based on trading and shipping rather than on agriculture.

Waves of Immigration

Greek striving for independence made the Turks shift from cooperation to persecution and massacres. In the 1821 War of Independence, Syros maintained neutrality and was thus a natural destination for waves of refugees from the coast of Asia Minor and islands close to it, in particular Chios and Psara. Those were active people, many of them merchants, shipbuilders and other qualified craftsmen. They brought along a wave of enterprise and creativity, which unfolded in the construction of a new town, Ermoupolis, named after Hermes, the god of commerce and profit.

The immigrant wave was expected to abandon Syros as soon as market conditions proved better elsewhere. However, these entrepreneurs made Ermoupolis their base, appreciating the free trade, without any interference. They were able to supply whatever the customers asked for: food, ammunition or even loot of war, or an occasional troup of slaves. When the war was over, the dynamic merchants adroitly shifted from war goods to traditional types of transit trade.

Well-padded wallets and quieter times made the merchants receptive to the more aesthetic side of life, as a suitable way of expressing their own status and promoting their city, by means of architecture, for example. While the first simple houses had been a mix of eastern and western features, a wave of Italian Renaissance now contributed to what became Ermoupolis’ special monument: the Neoclassical architecture, leaving its stamp on the layout of main streets, squares, public buildings and private residences; two- or three-storied houses with narrow fronts, windows densely set, ornamentation in marble and balconies of wrought iron.

Merchants and sea captains usually preferred a sea front location. Vaporia, meaning ship, was a favorite. It consisted of mansions hanging onto or perched on the cliffs above the sea, away from the smoke and noise of the factories. The grandest building of all, the mid-town City Hall by Ernst Ziller, was not begun until 1876. It influenced the general building style toward plastered surfaces instead of masonry, less marble but with decorations such as colonettes and statues made of terracotta, front doors often richly decorated.

Luxury homes were not enough for the upper classes of Ermoupolis, though. They were anxious to place their town at the forefront, welcoming any wave of refinement and modern thinking that came along. These novel ideas manifested themselves in Ermoupolis as schools, the first banks, an interest in literature, cafes chantants and social clubs, Italian opera companies performing at the Apollo Theater and several newspapers competing to bring the latest developments and fashion trends to an increasingly cosmopolitan city.

Waves of Emigration

A Presidential Decree from 1976 ensures Ermoupolis a harmonious development in building, both new and restored. Some consider the harbor an example of disharmony, terminated on one side by fine low buildings, on the other by the Neorion Shipyard. With its shining metal and steel muscles, the shipyard has in a way its own aesthetics. Being the leading workplace, it acts as an indispensable pacemaker for the old Queen. A growing hotel capacity, an Aegean Casino and funds from the European Union are not sufficient to keep the Queen floating.

Waves of elegance once swept through Ermoupolis and much of it remains, also in the abandoned houses that still radiate beauty and clearly have a future potential. It’s a quiet elegance immortalized in an extraordinary book: “Ermoupolis – A Historical Tour”, another project funded by the Union. It takes you via maps, pictures and texts to every building worth mentioning, district by district. You get to know house owners and the distinguished Hellas Club, where gentlemen joined in illegal gambling. The old repertoire of the Apollo Theater is revived and so are the whereabouts of the prostitutes.

Ermoupolis should at least be viewed from three angles. The shells of enormous factory halls await you behind Neorion, and so does a cozy fishing and small boat marina. Back in town, the Venizelou Street points straight to the majestic entrance of the City Hall on Miaouli Square. At Vaporia to the right, sea captain mansions regain their former glory, patches of which are reflected on the wavelets down below. The only thing missing is a huge wave of promotion, strong enough to send those reflections across the Aegean – an invitation for potential visitors to join the next tourist wave.

Many spectators from different countries including the UK enjoy theatre. Such kinds of performances as dramas and comedies are very popular with the audience today. It is interesting that the theatre of ancient Greece has greatly influenced the development of modern theatre. Ancient Greeks that performed in comfortable clothes and lightweight greek leather sandals have become the first theatre actors. Greek theatre has a long history that facilitated the development of such famous genres as the comedy and the tragedy.

The history of theatres goes back to the 6th century B.C. The first theatre performances were plays staged to honour numerous Greek gods. Ancient Greeks commemorated Dionysus, the god of the grape harvest, in a very unusual manner. They dressed up in rough goat skins and comfortable greek leather sandals and organised special festivals. A lot of people performed plays and sang songs in the honour of Dionysus. It was a common practice for different groups to compete with each other in performances. At the beginning a few people could participate in theatre plays because only a limited number of actors was allowed on the stage. The majority of roles were without any lines. This contributed to the development of the chorus that played an important role in ancient performances. The chorus delivered the lines of plays to the accompaniment of music.

The tragedy was a very famous genre in ancient Greece. The word tragedy literally means ”goat song”. Tragedies usually illustrated the search for meaning in life. Greek actors wearing white clothes and lightweight greek leather sandals played ancient heroes and gods. Most tragedies were based on the famous Greek myths. There were several noted Greek tragedy writers like Thespis, Sophocles, Solon and Homer. Some of their plays like Agamemnon, Antigone and Medea are still popular today.

The comedy is another famous genre of theatre performance originated in ancient Greece. Some people believe that comedy originated from imitation. It is worth noticing that many comedies depicted certain institutional drawbacks and made fun of them in the play. Comedians usually wore thin soled greek leather sandals that were very comfortable for active performances. The most influential comedy writers were Magnes, Aristophanes, Plato and Heraclides. Their works influenced such European authors as Shakespeare, Voltaire and Cervantes. They used some peculiar techniques of Greek writers in their works.

It goes without saying that theatre has become an important part of modern life. Many people enjoy amusing theatre performances and spend money in order to see their favourite actors. It is worth noticing that modern theatre has a long history that goes back to the times of ancient Greece. Such popular genres as comedy and tragedy originated there. Some of the plays written long ago are still performed in the modern theatre to the joy of wide audiences in many parts of the world. It is interesting that snug greek leather shoes worn during many performances by Greek actors of the past are also indispensable fashionable accessories today enjoyed by people of different cultures and ages.
